Why I'm Out-of-Network With Insurance

This is a question I get often, and I want to answer it honestly.

I am out-of-network with insurance by design. After several years of practicing within insurance networks, I made the decision to step away so I could offer the kind of care my clients deserve — care that isn't shaped by session caps, diagnostic requirements, treatment plan dictates, or the administrative weight that pulls focus from the therapeutic work itself.

When you work with me privately, here's what changes:

  • Your story belongs to you. Insurance companies require a mental health diagnosis on file and access to your treatment records. Working out-of-network keeps that information between us.

  • We set the pace. No predetermined session limits. No prior authorizations. We work at the depth and frequency your work actually calls for.

  • The work is the work. I'm not pulled away from clinical time by claims, appeals, and credentialing paperwork. You get my full attention.

  • You're treated as a whole person, not a diagnosis code. Much of what brings people into adoption-related therapy, identity work, or relational healing isn't easily captured by an insurance-billable diagnosis. Private pay lets us address what's actually going on.

Using Your Out-of-Network Benefits

Many of my clients are reimbursed a meaningful portion of their session fees through their insurance plan's out-of-network mental health benefits.

Here's how it works:

  1. You pay the full session fee at the time of service.

  2. I provide you with a monthly superbill — a detailed receipt formatted specifically for insurance reimbursement.

  3. You submit the superbill to your insurance company (most plans have an online portal that takes about 5 minutes).

  4. Your insurance reimburses you directly, typically 40–70% of the session fee after you meet your deductible.

To check your out-of-network benefits, call the member services number on the back of your insurance card and ask:

  • "Do I have out-of-network outpatient mental health benefits?"

  • "What is my out-of-network deductible, and have I met any of it this year?"

  • "What percentage of the session fee will be reimbursed after I meet my deductible?"

  • "Is there a session limit or required prior authorization for out-of-network mental health?"

I'm happy to walk through this with you during your free consultation if it would help.

A Note on Cost

I want to be transparent: therapy at this rate is an investment, and I don't take that lightly. What I offer in return is depth, expertise, and a therapeutic relationship that isn't bound by external limitations. My clients tend to be people who have done therapy before and are ready for something different — something more honest, more specific, and more transformative.

If we're a fit and the financial piece feels like a barrier, please mention it during your consultation. I keep a small number of reduced-fee slots reserved for clients in financial hardship, and I'm always happy to refer to qualified clinicians whose fees may align better with your current circumstances.
